You’re somewhere past forty. The clothes that worked at thirty don’t sit the way they used to, and most style advice online seems written for someone who still gets asked for ID. You don’t want a new personality. You just want to get dressed in the morning and look like yourself, only sharper.
That’s who Sharply Simple is for. I’m Ray McKenzie, I’m 42, and not long ago I was that guy.
The Photo That Started It
At my friend’s 40th birthday, someone took a group photo. When I saw it, I didn’t like how I looked. My shirt was old and too big for me, and I looked tired. That was the day I decided to change how I dress.
I didn’t want a personal stylist. I wanted someone to explain, in plain words, why some clothes worked on me and others didn’t. Nobody was doing that for men my age. So I started working it out myself. Trying things on. Taking notes. Returning a lot.
Sharply Simple is where those notes ended up.
What Changes After Forty
Your body shifts a little. Your hair shifts more. Your job, your budget and your patience for shopping all change too. Most menswear content ignores all of that and hands you the same slim-fit advice it gives a college student.
Here’s what I’ve learned. Style after forty is mostly about fit and restraint. A jacket that fits your shoulders. Trousers that break cleanly over your shoes. A haircut that works with the hairline you have now, not the one on your old driver’s licence. Get those three right and you can stop thinking about clothes for most of the week.
That’s the whole idea. Fewer decisions, better results.
How I Write About It
I write the way I’d talk to a friend standing in a fitting room. The short answer comes first and the reasons come after. If something only looks good on a twenty-five-year-old model, I’ll tell you. If a cheaper option does the same job, you’ll hear about it.
When I recommend a product, I’ll tell you whether I’ve worn it or used it myself, or whether the recommendation comes from research and other people’s reviews. You deserve to know the difference, and I’d rather lose a sale than your trust.

- I live in a small town with my wife and our two teenagers. They’re my toughest style critics, and they never hold back.

- The oldest thing I still wear is a navy peacoat I bought in 2009. Somehow it fits better now than it did back then.
- It took me five different barbers to find one who knew how to cut hair for a receding hairline.

How Every Article Gets Made
Every article on Sharply Simple is fact-checked before it’s published. I read and edit each one myself for accuracy and clarity before it goes live. Sizing, product details and prices change over time, so I go back through older articles regularly and update anything that’s out of date.
